In the first lesson of our series, “Calories 101″, we introduce you to the concept of Calorie. It is important to get familiar with the term calorie since it is predominantly used in Nutrition and Exercise.

| Calories are units of energy. One calorie is the amount of energy necessary to raise the temperature of a kilogram of water 1 degree Celsius. |
| Also Called |
| Calories are also called kilocalories and can be abbreviated as cal or kcal. Kilocalorie means 1,000 calories. Over time, the general populations dropped the prefix of “kilo” and just use calorie. For the purpose of this website we will refer to “calorie’ or “Calorie” as meaning kilocalorie. |
